The other day I saw a solar eclipse. The sunny day became strangely dim. I couldn’t look directly at the sun, but using a pair of binoculars reflected on a piece of cardboard, I could see that the sun was in the shape of a crescent moon. These dances are my binoculars and cardboard that I hope will allow my audience to consider failure and decline without losing their “sight” (i.e. perspective). Our culture has difficulty looking directly at its mistakes, and those who live here prefer to look away from vulnerability or deterioration. However, we live in exciting times. Decline, downturn, degradation have become common words used to describe the global economic and environmental state and it is getting more difficult to ignore what isn’t working. In such conditions, I think it’s useful to take a look at how things fall apart, even if it has to be through the shadowy lens of performance.
